(they/them)
Marten Tanager of Thistle Down Farm is a queer, non-binary farmer and artist living and working in rural Vermont. They raise Katahdin and Icelandic sheep, as well as Alpine X Nubian dairy goats, and a small flock of laying hens. Rooted in a belief that all humans deserve ethically raised, nutritious food, regardless of access to wealth, all of the meat, dairy, eggs, and wool from their farm are offered to their community as gifts or at a sliding scale price. The farm is financially supported through volunteer labor, itinerant stealth grazing practices, financial and in-kind donations, and their various art projects and other paid organizing work. Marten is inspired to make photos that represent rural queer identities, and which convey interspecies kinship, intimacy, connection, and joy.
